Insights from SMWG @ SeedCon26

The Seed Microbiome Working Group (SMWG) was delighted to host a dynamic and highly interactive session at SeedCon in early May, titled Shaping the Future of Seed Microbiome Research. The session brought together participants in a collaborative World Café–style format. This created a unique space for open discussion, exchange of ideas, and community building around some of the most pressing questions in seed microbiome research.

One of the most valuable outcomes of the session was the breadth of perspectives in the room. Early-career researchers and senior scientists engaged in direct dialogue with industry representatives and science writers, enriching the discussions and broadening the scope of ideas beyond academic research alone. This exchange helped surface new concepts, strengthen ongoing discussions, and highlight shared challenges across different sectors and approaches. The energy in the room reflected a growing and increasingly cohesive community working toward a common goal: advancing our understanding of seed microbiomes and their applications.

Overall, the session was a great success. It not only generated numerous insightful ideas but also contributed to building stronger links within the SMWG network and the broader research and innovation community. We are grateful to all participants and facilitators who contributed their time, expertise, and enthusiasm.

We look forward to continuing these discussions and building on the momentum created at SeedCon as we collectively shape the future of seed microbiome research.
